It is a uniquely Australian version of the problem of people dumping their unwanted pet. It seems to me totally absurd but in the Northern Territory it is possible to buy a baby crocodile as a pet for £130, but once they grow to 30 inches in length, owners are required by law to return them to a crocodile farm or wildlife park. Obviously people not getting their money back, many times just keep them in a swimming pool or let them loose.. and now these ex-pet crocodiles are becoming a serious problem, especially in the city of Darwin.
